Belleek Parian Ware Green Man Small Pitcher Vintage
A vintage small pitcher of Belleek Parian Ware featuring a depiction of the mythical Green Man from ancient British folklore.
Traditional myths of the Green Man, a supernatural entity began in the pre-Roman British Isles. The Green Man was associated with the renewal of nature in the spring. The face of the green man was usually depicted being all or partly made up of foliage, occasionally with the addition of new vines sprouting from the mouth of the green man.
This little pitcher is a nice remembrance of folkloric traditions of the British Isles.
The Belleek factory began the production of fine Parian ware at Belleek, Fermanagh, Ireland (now Northern Ireland) in 1857 using local deposits of white feldspar and Cornish china clay.
This eggshell porcelain with a white lustre finish enjoyed great popularity during the Victorian era.
It is still produced today in current styles and with continued production of traditional 19th century designs.
The clear makers mark upon the base indicates production of this item occurred in the years 1955 to 1965.
In excellent condition.
