Royal Copenhagen Knud Kyhn "Faun Riding Backwards On Bear", rare figurine #976
A rare, antique ceramic figurine by artist Knud Kyhn called "Faun Backwards on Bear", made in the early 1900's.
A large figurine with presence, this authentic ceramic piece of art is in excellent condition and it's rarity only makes it a fine piece to add to a gallery of obscure fairytale inspired pieces.
Stamped on bottom of the figurine in the underglaze is the official green backstamp mark with blue waves - the royal crown surrounded with Royal, Copenhagen and Denmark underneath with Model No.1804
But who is this artist that made this ceramic piece? Danish artist Knud Kyhn (1880 to 1969) was a painter and sculptor and he worked at Royal Copenhagen Factory for most of his working life in periods: 1903-1908; 1923-1932.
Together with his wife he had a small ceramic workshop in Farum, where he created and sold art pottery in his own name....His main focus was on animal figurines in stoneware with a sun glaze and later the most desirable and collectable brown “Bear” glaze became one of the largest successes of Royal Copenhagen in the area of figurines. These brown bears were so popular that in 1908 he joined Christian Thomsen and others in producing several rare and wanted faun figurines along with other mythological themed figurines
