Marie Corelli was a very popular author in the early 1900s, but while contemporaries like H.G. Wells and Arthur Conan Doyle remain well-known names, she has faded into relative obscurity.

"The Devil's Motor: A Fantasy," is a highly stylized allegory for the ailments of industrialization and rapid progress. With bombastic and gory lines, this book tells the story of Satan in an early automobile, flying over nations and laying waste to man, woman and child!

Our copy is the Hodder-Stoughton first edition of 1910, with the binding and cover in great shape. The front was apparently lightly greased with engine oil at the printing house as if straight from Satan's glove compartment. Printed by the Edinburgh Press in London, there are no page numbers. Unfortunately this copy only has 2 of the original 6 colour plates illustrated by Arthur Severn, so we are asking a discounted price. Still, a very neat old book with beautiful designs. Size is 9" x 11 1/2," red leather bound without a dust jacket, ornate gilt titling on front and spine.
